                          What is the FIT Program?

Click here for more info on FIT

The FIT program is in place for systems generating over 10 kW of power.
Ontario's feed-in tariff or FIT Program is North America's first comprehensive guaranteed pricing structure for renewable electricity production. It offers stable prices under long-term contracts for energy generated from renewable sources, including: Bio-mass, Bio-gas, Landfill gas, On and off shore wind, Solar Photovoltiac(PV) and Water

The FIT Program was enabled by the Green Energy and Green Economy Act, 2009 which was passed into law on May 14, 2009. The Ontario Power Authority is responsible for implementing the program.

By encouraging the development of renewable energy in Ontario, the FIT Program will:
                          -  Help Ontario phase out coal-fired electrical generation by 2014 - largest climate change iniative in Canada
                          -  Boost economic activity and the development of renewable energy technologies
                          -  Create new green industries and jobs.

                          What is the microFIT program?

Click here for more info on microFIT

The microFIT program is in place for systems generating 10 KW of power or less.

Consider the benefits of generating green energy from renewable sources such as the sun, wind, water or bioenergy, and selling it for a guaranteed price. You can be part of Ontario’s growing green energy movement, make money and contribute to a cleaner environment.   If you are a homeowner, farmer or small business owner, you have the opportunity to develop a very small or “micro” renewable electricity generation project (10 kilowatts or less in size) on your property. Under the microFIT Program, you will be paid a guaranteed price for all the electricity your project produces for at least 20 years.

Selling the power vs. using it

The solar systems that we install can be used for powering your own home rather then being sold back to the grid.  If you choose to take your home off the grid and use the power yourself, the process and timelines change.  When applying to the FIT or microFIT program, there is generally a 3-6 month waiting perioid to get your conditional offer back from the OPA.  If you choose to use the power yourself, the only wait time is in the delivery of materials, which is very minimal.  The system will also need to have expensive batteries to store generated power for round the clock use.  One of the most commonly asked question regarding this topic is, can some of the power be used to power your home and the rest be sold back?  No, you may not split up the power.  You must either use it or sell it.

How Long Will the Panels Generate Power?

The manufacturer guarantees that the panels will produce 80% of their initial output after 25 years. Most panels come with a 20 or 25 year manufacturer's warranty. The first solar panels were created in the 1950’s and are still generating power today.  With a lifespan like that, it's safe to say that your panels will last long enough to do exactly what you want them to, for as long as you'd like them to.
